WATER JAR POTTERY WITH MULTI-STONE INLAY BY RUSSELL SANCHEZ (SAN ILDEFONSO)
Russell Sanchez was born in 1966. He began working in clay at the age of 12 under the guidance of his aunt Rose Gonzalez. He was also encouraged and inspired by Dora Tse Pe, Tony Da, and Jody Folwell. He is considered an innovator in techniques and design, like Folwell, taking traditional methods and styles and experimenting with clay bodies and surface decoration. His work can be found in the collections of the Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ; the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe, NM; the Museum of Natural History, Los Angeles, CA, and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
