Sterling silver/quartz bracelet by Althea Cajero (Acoma/Santo Domingo)
Althea Cajero is the daughter of jeweler Dorothy Tortatlita and lapidary artist Tony Tortalita. She is of Acoma and Santo Domingo heritage and grew up in Santo Domingo Pueblo. Althea worked for the New Mexico Indian Health Service for nearly 20 years before becoming interested in making jewelry herself. She studied for 2 years at the Poeh Arts Cultural Center in Pojoaque Pueblo under the direction of noted jeweler Fritz Casuse before resigning from her job with the health service and embarking on a career as a full time studio artist. She credits her husband, Jemez sculptor Joe Cajero, with inspiring her current path.
