Dextra Nampeyo was born in 1928 at the village of Polacca, First Mesa on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. She is the great- granddaughter of the famous Tewa potter Nampeyo (1860- 1942). She was taught by her mother and has been active making pottery since 1967. She gathers her own clay and uses traditional tools to create her pottery. She was declared an Arizona Living Treasure in 1995 and received the first Arizona State Museum Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.
