Maria Samora was born in 1977 and grew up on the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. She came to jewelry making as a young adult after taking some classes at the University of New Mexico in Taos. But it was not until she received a scholarship to study with renowned jeweler Phil Poirier that she decided to pursue jewelry making as a career. She spent 10 years apprenticing with Poirier while working full time as a waitress to learn and perfect her techniques and develop her unique style, which continues to evolve.
