Peter Nelson was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Northeastern Arizona. He is a member of the Tsinnijinnie (Blackgoat) and Copah (Water) Clans. He has been actively making jewelry since 1977 and learned the art of silversmithing in High School at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

He is predominately known for his traditional and contemporary silver jewelry, often with the inclusion of precious gemstones such as turquoise and coral. He is also known for his beautiful geometric patterns in unique silver finishes.
