MASAU'U SKELETON EARTH GOD KACHINA DOLL BY MANFRED SUSUNKEWA (HOPI)
The Masau'u is the Earth God, Master of the Fourth World, Spirit of Death and the Keeper of Fire.
Manfred Susunkewa was born in 1940 in the village of Shungopavi on Second Mesa on the Hopi reservation in northern Arizona. He is a member of the Bear Strap Clan and has been active carving since the 1960's. After graduating high school, he studied painting at the Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, KS, going on to win a prestigious Rockefeller scholarship to attend the "Southwest Indian Art Project" at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe in 1964 and then went to work with Lloyd Kiva New in Scottsdale where he made jewelry and silk printed fabrics for Kiva New's clothing label. Manfred had been carving Kachina dolls since the 1960's in the action style of Alvin James Makya. However by the 1970's, he reversed course and started carving Kachina dolls that looked "old." He is credited with the revival of the "Old Style" carvings that collectors around the world enjoy today. Museum collections include: Rijks Museum for Folk Art, Leiden Netherlands; Bureau of Indian Affairs, Washington, DC; Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ; Arizona State Museum, Tucson, AZ; Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO; Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff, AZ; Museum of Man, San Diego, CA, and many private collections.

Katsina dolls are fragile by nature and may be broken in transit. We do our best to pack them efficiently and carefully, however due to their fragility, transit damage is unavoidable in some cases. Please keep this in mind when purchasing katsina dolls online for shipping. Luckily, katsina dolls do not decrease in value when repaired and can usually be repaired in the comfort of your home using a mixture of wood and super glue for smaller, clean breaks. For more extensive repairs from transit damage, see our returns page or store for details.
