BUTTERFLY MAIDEN PALHIK MANA KACHINA CARVING BY CECIL CALNIMPTEWA (HOPI)
Cecil Calniptewa was born and raised on Moenkopi and Third Mesa on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. He has been actively carving since 1966 and is considered one of the top Hopi Katsina carvers. He learned the art of carving at first from his father, Cecil Sr. but did not get fully involved until he was exposed to the arts in high school. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his work, including Best in Show at Santa Fe Indian Market.
He is primarily known for his highly detailed and realistic contemporary carvings.
The Butterfly Maiden always appears with the Butterfly Kachina during the Night Dance and only in the kiva.

Katsina dolls are fragile by nature and may be broken in transit. We do our best to pack them efficiently and carefully, however due to their fragility, transit damage is unavoidable in some cases. Please keep this in mind when purchasing katsina dolls online for shipping. Luckily, katsina dolls do not decrease in value when repaired and can usually be repaired in the comfort of your home using a mixture of wood and super glue for smaller, clean breaks. For more extensive repairs from transit damage, see our returns page or store for details.
