Alice Cling was born in the mid 1940's in the Tonalea area of northern Arizona. She was taught by here mother Rose Williams, herself a well-known potter. Alice makes her pots by collecting natural clay from an area around Black Mesa then sifting and refining the clay body with sand and water. She forms her pots by hand and burnishes the surface to smooth it. She applies an iron-based slip on the surface prior to firing. The combination of the slip, kiln heat and juniper ash from the firing all contribute to the subtle orange to black shading on the finished pot. Once the pot is fired, she applies a thin coat of warm pine pitch and then burnishes that as well to give the piece a soft sheen. She avoids applied decoration in favor of the overall form and complexity of the surface colors.
