KOYALA CLOWN KACHINA DOLL BY RYON POLEQUAPTEWA (HOPI)
Ryon is from Shungopavi Village on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona and is a member of the Sun Clan. He resides in Phoenix, AZ. Ryon carves traditional style Katsina dolls as seen from personal experience. Each one-of-a-kind figure is imbued with humor, imagination, and character. Ryon learned the art from Edward Seechoma. Much of Ryon's current work is inspired by the Kachina dolls of Wilson Tawaquaptewa (1871- 1960) who intentionally created dolls that were not exact representations of the Kachina dancers to protect their sacred nature.
Koyala
This a Rio Grande clown that is sometimes referred to as a Tewa clown. They are considered to be the fathers of the Kachinas. They behave in the usual manner of clowns with loud voices and outrageous antics. They also may serve as drummers for dances.
Measurements: 17" tall x 7" wide x 3" deep
Katsina dolls are fragile by nature and may be broken in transit. We do our best to pack them efficiently and carefully, however due to their fragility, transit damage is unavoidable in some cases. Please keep this in mind when purchasing katsina dolls online for shipping. Luckily, katsina dolls do not decrease in value when repaired and can usually be repaired in the comfort of your home using a mixture of wood and super glue for smaller, clean breaks. For more extensive repairs from transit damage, see our returns page or store for details.
